The Accursed Mountains (Prokletije)– the highest mountain range of the Dinaric Alps, it is situated on the Albania – Montenegro border and on the territory of Kosovo. The major part of it, with the highest peak of Maja Jezercë (standing at 2,694 m AMSL) belongs to Albania.
The name Prokletije stands for „accursed” and is connected with the forbidding view of the inaccessible rocky mountains that are covered in shining large snowflakes even in the summer months. It is a wild, sparsely populated region, very rarely visited by the tourists. But as a result, the local wildlife is almost intact!
The mountains are composed of crystalline rocks, sandstones and schists. Limestones and dolomites occur locally as well. The formation of the rocks was the result of the Alpine orogeny. The contemporary features of the landscape, however, are due to the action of a glacier that entered this region in the Pleistocene, leaving behind numerous cirques and lakes. In the areas where the limestone occurs, there appeared grottos and caves.
The diversity of the types of the landscape, flora and fauna gave rise to the creating of numerous national parks, e.g. The Thethi National Park, Valbona Valley National Park (both in Albania).
Mapy można znaleźć w Internecie między innymi pod poniższymi adresami. Pod ostatnim można nawet taką mapę kupić.
You can find the maps at the following addresses. At the last link you can even buy one.
From the Albanian side it is best to set for the exploration of the Accursed Mountains from Thethi – a town lying at their feet. For Thethi there leads a ballast road, the one that is virtually impassable for cars. You can reach Boge in a passenger car at the farthest. It is about 20 km from Boge to Thethi. You can cover this distance hitchhiking or take a short cut across the mountains. We have seen one bus, but there have not been any timetable. We have also seen a sign “taxi Shkodër”.
It is best to rely on your own tent. Buni and Gropeat are best staging areas for the accursed peaks, there is enough room for setting up a camp and, what is most important, there is drinking water available. There will probably be a lodge built in the future. You can also sleep the night at some local family’s in Thethi, but there is a long way up from there.
There was actually one bar in Theti in 2009. But in Albania, there can be a bar in every house, just as everybody is a cab driver, if need be. At any rate, the menu was very simple. Any shops in sight. We were accosted by some children in the street. They asked if we wanted to buy something, but we never got to know what they had on offer, as we already had our own provisions. It is best to provide yourself beforehand in Koplik.
If you like the wilds and loneliness on the trail, the Prokletije are ideal for you! But you need to hurry up, as even there the commercialization has already begun and it is progressing really fast. On the other hand, there are so many mountains here, that it will probably take years for them to get bugged by annoying crowds of tourists. And probably hundreds of years to reach anything like the situation in Polish Tatra Mountains. You can read about our adventures in the Prokletije Mountains at:
